Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. has renewed its partnership with developer Gogolook to provide eligible depositors and credit cardholders with free access to caller-identification application Whoscall, aiming to counter phone-based financial fraud.

Under the renewed memorandum of understanding, qualifying RCBC account holders will receive one year of access to Whoscall. The application identifies incoming unknown numbers and flags suspicious callers before users answer or disclose sensitive banking information.

The move comes amid a nationwide rise in social engineering schemes targeting bank and even crypto customers. Scammers frequently impersonate bank representatives through phone calls, text messages and fake promotional offers to trick individuals into handing over one-time passwords and account credentials. “As social engineering tactics become increasingly deceptive, fraudsters also target credit cardholders through unsolicited calls disguised as urgent security alerts, card upgrades, or fake reward redemptions aimed at extracting sensitive credentials like OTPs,” said Arniel Vincent B. Ong, president and chief executive officer of RCBC Credit Cards.

Ong said the service provides cardholders with an initial layer of defense to filter out fraudulent communications before unauthorized transactions occur.

Lito Villanueva, RCBC executive vice president and chief innovations and inclusion officer, stated that client security remains central to broader digital adoption across the bank’s platforms, including RCBC Pulz, RCBC ATM Go and RCBC DiskarTech. “Digital banking can only reach its full potential when customers have confidence that they are protected as they transact,” Villanueva said, adding that proactive security measures help sustain consumer trust in digital financial systems. Mel Migriño, country head and general manager of Gogolook Philippines, said the collaboration merges the bank’s client reach with the company’s verification database to stop deceptive interactions before they lead to financial losses.

Taiwan-based Gogolook officially introduced Whoscall to the Philippine market in 2023, establishing data-sharing partnerships with government bodies including the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center to map local scam operations. RCBC has integrated the third-party screening tool alongside internal cybersecurity measures as Philippine financial institutions increasingly address voice phishing and caller-ID spoofing.
