FIFA Moves FIFA Collect to Avalanche with FIFA Blockchain

by Sebastian Tucker

FIFA is developing a custom Layer-1 blockchain in partnership with Avalanche to support its digital collectibles platform, FIFA Collect.

The new platform, referred to as the FIFA Blockchain, will host all existing and future FIFA Collect NFTs. As part of the transition, users will need to migrate from Algorand-based wallets to Ethereum-compatible ones, such as MetaMask.

Whilst the initial focus is on supporting digital collectibles, the infrastructure has been designed to allow for future expansion into other applications.

What does this mean to FIFA Collect users?

As FIFA is migrating FIFA Collect from the Algorand blockchain to a new dedicated chain, all current NFTs and marketplace activity will shift to this platform. This change will also affect users, who must stop using Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly, and instead use Ethereum-compatible wallets such as MetaMask.

The transition aims to provide better support for global usage, especially during high-traffic periods such as international tournaments. Avalanche’s infrastructure is designed to process transactions more quickly and at lower cost than many existing public networks.

The goal is to offer smoother digital experiences and simpler wallet access for its 5 billion fans around the world.

Why did FIFA choose Avalanche?

Avalanche was selected based on several technical criteria. Its ability to support custom Layer-1 chains allows FIFA to operate its own blockchain environment whilst maintaining compatibility with broader Ethereum tools. This was seen as necessary to support the platform’s future growth.

The network offers low transaction fees and fast confirmation times, which FIFA believes will help improve the experience for users interacting with digital collectibles. Avalanche’s compatibility with Ethereum also means a wider range of wallets and developer tools can be used.

“The decision was based on a rigorous analysis of key factors including performance, security, transaction fees, customizability, and scalability,” said Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex.
